Social isolation and loneliness aren't just individual experiences - they're global health concerns that can significantly impact both physical and mental health and wellbeing. While these issues affect people across all walks of life, research has shown that older LGBTQIA+ adults face an increased risk of social isolation which impacts their wellbeing. Despite this knowledge, many existing support services and interventions may not fully address the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ communities.

That's where Rainbow Connections comes in. This new research project aims to bridge this gap by developing practical guidance for community-based interventions and supports that can effectively support older LGBTQIA+ adults. The project is particularly timely given that most existing research comes from the USA, with very limited evidence from the UK and none from Scotland.

What Makes Rainbow Connections Different?

Rather than simply adapting existing interventions for older adults, Rainbow Connections takes a ground-up approach. The project combines three key elements: a thorough review of existing community-based interventions, direct engagement with stakeholders through focus groups and interviews, and workshops with diverse LGBTQIA+ community members. This comprehensive approach ensures that the resulting guidance will be both evidence-based and deeply rooted in the actual needs and preferences of the communities it aims to serve.

Why It Matters

Early findings suggest that while community-based interventions show promise in reducing social isolation and loneliness, we need a much deeper understanding of what works for different LGBTQIA+ subgroups. By addressing this knowledge gap, Rainbow Connections will help organizations develop more effective, tailored support services. The ultimate goal? To ensure that older LGBTQIA+ adults can access community-based support that truly understands and meets their needs.

This research marks an important step toward creating more inclusive and effective support services for older LGBTQIA+ adults in our communities. As the project progresses, we look forward to sharing more insights and findings that will help shape the future of community-based support services.
